Studies show you become what you think/ 24 Hour Caregivers in Beverly Hills

What were your attitudes towards aging throughout your life? Believe it or not, such things have a great impact on your present life. Psychologists call these attitudes "age stereotypes" and they can have great impacts on senior health.

According to the New York Times, the self fulfilling prophecy is true...at least when it comes to old age. Seniors who thought poorly of aging in their lifetimes- with associations such as loneliness, becoming useless, or devalued, were less likely to provide self care and died earlier. They were also more likely to suffer from memory loss disorders, such as Alzheimer.

In essence, aging gracefully is about mind over matter.

A-1 Home Care provides assistance with cleanliness, daily health, and self care. Everyone deserves to live in a positive environment, even if they need help to get there. Our Beverly Hills 24 Hour Caregivers do that around the clock, making sure that the fridge is full, floors are clean, bed is tucked, and loved ones asleep at night.

Amino Acids for After Surgery Recovery Tips/ Home Care in Beverly Hills

Recovering after surgery is not just about getting adequate rest or taking care of a wound; a healthy diet is essential for post-surgery healing. A diet rich in nutrients can help with recovery time, help you regain your strength and help boost your immune system. Sometimes it can be difficult to eat enough after surgery due to loss of appetite, but not getting enough nutrients can slow healing and delay the closure of incisions. There are some foods, however, you can try to optimize your healing process.

Certain amino acids seem to help wounds heal faster. The amino acid glutamine is particularly good for post surgery healing. A Harvard Medical School review of glutamine indicates that people who got the amino acid intravenously after surgery spent an average of four fewer days in the hospital. Glutamine also helps your immune system function and appears to be needed for normal brain function and digestion. Foods rich in amino acids are:

Fish, chicken, eggs, brown rice, walnuts, raw spinach, almonds and sunflower seeds. Amino acid-rich foods also tend to be good sources of protein, which is essential for healing after surgery.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Do you know the origins of Thanksgiving? Americans typically consider Thanksgiving as a longstanding tradition, but the holiday as we know it began in the 19th century. In 1846, Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of a magazine called Godley’s Lady’s Book, campaigned for an annual national thanksgiving holiday after a passage about the harvest gathering of 1621 was discovered and incorrectly labeled as the first Thanksgiving. As a result, the standardized fare of turkey dinner, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy are now a tradition.

A-1 Home Care provides home care services for elders in Beverly Hills through the winter holidays. Trips abroad or across the country can be accommodated with our skillful elder care providers. If you need someone to provide supervision for a senior family member during the Thanksgiving holiday, give us a call.

A bit of insight into what the government shutdown can mean

The recent government shutdown has taken the country by storm, with thousands of pages of media written about it. However, it's confusing to determine what exactly will be affected by this partial shutdown. A-1 Home Care hopes to provide elders and adults in Beverly Hills with further insight with this handy bulletpoint list, from http://www.usa.gov/shutdown.shtml
  • Vital services that ensure seniors and young children have access to healthy food and meals may not have sufficient Federal funds to serve all beneficiaries in an extended lapse.
  • Call centers, hotlines and regional offices that help veterans understand their benefits will close to the public.
  • Veterans’ compensation, pension, education, and other benefits could be cut off in the case of an extended  shutdown.
  • Every one of America’s national parks and monuments, from Yosemite to the Smithsonian to the Statue of Liberty, will be immediately closed.
  • New applications for small business loans and loan guarantees will be immediately halted.
  • Research into life-threatening diseases and other areas will stop, and new patients won’t be accepted into clinical  trials at the National Institutes of Health.
  • Work to protect consumers, ranging from child product safety to financial security to the safety of hazardous waste facilities, will cease. The EPA will halt non-essential inspections of chemical facilities and drinking water systems.
  • Permits and reviews for planned energy and transportations projects will stop, preventing companies from working on these projects. Loans to rural communities will be halted.
  • Hundreds of thousands of Federal employees including many charged with protecting us from terrorist threats, defending our borders, inspecting our food, and keeping our skies safe will work without pay until the shutdown  ends.
  • Hundreds of thousands of additional federal workers will be immediately and indefinitely furloughed without pay.

Hospice Care in Beverly Hills

The word "hospice" comes from a Latin word hospes, which means "a guest". It wasn't until the 19th century in the United Kingdom that hospice was associated with care for terminally ill seniors and adults. The first centers for hospice care directed towards palliative caregiving were for tuberculosis and cancer. The need for caregiving of this type came about when hospitals could not sustain the round the clock care needed by dying patients.

Hospice care is a type of caregiving service that focuses on the comfort and relief of a terminally ill or dying person. This focuses on emotional support, basic medical supervision and spiritual needs. A-1 Home Care offers talented services for palliative care. Joint replacement is great for people with bone damage, such as Osteoarthritis. If you are experiencing pain and stiffness to the point that other options aren't helping, consult your doctor.
